“Keep the oil changed,” Ramos always reminds me. Fully bilingual, Gomez and Ramos can deliver their service (and humor) in both Spanish and English. It’s hard to drop off your car without having some kind of laugh. “It looks real nice, but it’s good for nothing!” He’ll admit sometimes he and Ramos will joke about customers’ attitudes and predicaments. “This car reminds me of my ex-girlfriend,” said Gomez after I returned for the verdict. I clearly remember the time I brought in a used car I was thinking of buying to have the Lab review it. From the outside an ordinary auto repair shop, somehow stopping by the “Lab” is not unlike dropping by your cousin’s place - If your cousin was a highly skilled mechanic. Now in its 30th year, the city’s only Green-Certified auto repair shop has been run by partners Robert Ramos and Luis Gomez since it opened in 1988. Some Alamedans may not have discovered the little gem hidden away, just off Webster Street at 636 Buena Vista Ave., by the name of Alameda Auto Lab.
